Real Useful Garden Tool. Sturdy And Strong.

Here's a real useful garden tool. I found it while out running about five years ago. It was left at an abandoned work site so I picked it up and brought it home for my garden tools collection. At first I couldn't figure out what special type of shovel it was or what I'd ever use it for. Then I started to use it for digging round holes for planting potted plants I bought at the nursery. Well, It worked a lot better than any spade I had. Then I dug a couple post holes with it. Real good results! Now I use it for all sorts of things. It's just a handy tool. It's very strong and well bit. There's U.S.A. stamped into the metal. The D handle makes it real easy to use. The handle and other wood, probably Ash, is sturdy and strong, albeit somewhat weathered. It's an excellent tool.Gary Peterson

My favorite garden tool of all time

My sister gave me one of these and it has become my favorite garden tool by far. It is the most versatile tool I've ever used. When I go out into the yard, I grab my garden gloves and the EZ digger every time. I use it for digging, weeding, packing dirt around plants, making holes, breaking up clods, you name it. It seems to take the place of many tools I used to use. We have dozens of incense cedars that pop up every year which I gently dig up with my EZ digger for replanting elsewhere. You won't realize how useful it will be until you own one.I recommend some bright pink nail polish on the handle so you don't lose it in the yard, one day I lost it TWICE in an hour, it was a horrible feeling to have lost my favorite tool!!I am an Oregon Master Gardener and I have a great appreciation for simple gardening and the joys of simple tools that just work. I have used many different kinds. I highly recommend this to all gardeners, I can't say enough good about it. (Beware of others that look similar, they are not as strong and don't have the same helpful curve.) I think all garden stores should carry these instead of the plethora of dull trowels and inferior plastic handled diggers. This is the one you want.

Hands down, best gardening hand tool

As an avid gardener and someone who has used and tried many gardening tools, and also as someone who doesn't like to work harder than she has to, (that's code for "lazy"), this is by far the best gardening hand digging tool available. It is invaluable for digging planting holes for annuals and perennials, is fantastic for bulbs, and I wouldn't use anything else. It saves so much strain and wear on my hands, wrists and arms. Over the years I have had two of these and lost one and wore the other one out (my own fault -- left it outside in the elements and the wooden handle eventually fell off), so I'm about to order two more.The EZ digger, (also known as a Ho-mi Korean trowel), is at the top of my list of my five essential gardening tools:1) EZ digger2) transplanting spade (best all-purpose shovel around)3) good pair of pruners4) good pair of loppers5) expandable rakeand with those 5 tools, I can tackle 99% of my gardening tasks. Without them, I feel powerless to get my gardening tasks accomplished.

OMG!

OMG! This tool is surprising. I bought one and in a month bought two more and placed them in front yard, back yard, and my wife's vegetable garden. This is the tool always with me now and my plants are really flourishing whatsoever.I am able to weed out and breaking hard top soil and turn it into soft simultaneous very easily and rapidly. Making top soil soft is probably the most important thing because otherwise plants' root can't breathe and can't take water into their roots. And this has been hardest job for me to keep soil soft all the time. This hard job turned into pleasuring easy job with this Homi.I am a Korean and I knew every single farmer in Korea had this tool but I didn't know why. I grown up in Seoul which is really urban area. Now I am living in Southern California and has been gardening for about 13 years and has been using every kind of gardening tools including made in England, Netherland, which are really top grade and expensive.I didn't expect much from this tool when I ordered with other items which was the main item I needed, not this Homi. I was just curious about Homi why every Korean farmers have this. Now, I understand them.This is not really a tool for digging deep on rock hard soil. So, it's not correct to call it easy digger. This is Homi, which has been used thousands years by Korean farmers for enough reason. You need to sharpen it to make it have sharp point and also set its blade sharp, and it wouldn't be easy because the whole blade is curved. Once you have done, go for some weeding or tilling, you will admire it like me.

Manufacture with good name - BAD quality control

I purchase both the Spear & Jackson Stainless Steel Border Fork and SpadeThe good :-1. Stainless Steel2. Nice wooden handles2. 10 year guarantee3. The size and weight (light and small) was great for wife gardeningThe bad :-1. The price was over $50.00 each ( not too bad for good quality tools)2. The spade has a number of flaws both on the blade and handleI have always thought that Spear & Jackson produced high quality toolsbut no more, both the flaws where created in the manufacturing of the productthey are very easy to see and should not have passed a quality inspectionon a $50.00 spade (perhaps there is no Quality Control)Finally perhaps the old brick and mortar business still have benefits,I would not have pick a spade with the flaws in a local store.Without the flaws I would have rated both at 5 Stars.

Great Spade!

This spade is very solid and I love the mirror finish. It rinses off easily and it has been very useful cutting through hard dry soil in this extreme drought season we've been having. I have used it for stripping away sod to put in stepping stones. It is expensive for a garden tool but it is worth the price.

Very Useful if you dig while seated.

I used to double trench part of the garden each year and with our heavy clay soil, broke several shovels over the years. But to me, the standard spading shovel was my friend and I loved the feel of the hickory handles. However, the decades have passed and back and knee trouble have greatly slowed my digging. Last year I tried digging while seated -- just using my arms to work the shovel into the soil. Decades of adding compost and sand have made my soil reasonable friable but it is still a clay based soil. I couldn't dig very deep without standing up and stepping on the back edge of the shovel.The spear head shovel arrived today and I spent an hour and a half turning a five foot by five foot raised bed. I was able to slowly work the blade into the soil about 2/3 of the length of the shovel head, and then go back a second time and get the lip of the shovel about 2 inches below the soil line. It isn't double trenching, but I believe the bed is pretty well turned.The coating on the blade works about as well as any other coated blade. After a minute of digging, about 1/4" of soil stuck to the blade. Because the blade is 1/3 smaller than a standard shovel blade and because the handle is so light, adhering soil was not an issue. The spear point taper works well for me. Used the traditional way, I'm sure it would make it easier to dig in heavy soil or soil with a moderate amount of roots. Of course, you are not moving as much dirt, so it will take you longer.The overall length is the same as my standard garden shovel. I have never enjoyed digging with a shorter D handle shovel so i would recommend the long version. The end has a hole for hanging the shovel. I would rather have a solid end, since I end up pushing a bit from the end. That rubber loop may break down over time. The blade is riveted twice and has collar. Both are important in a shovel, because they keep the part of the blade that holds the handle from twisting and eventually breaking. I know this from experience. The handle itself is a lot lighter than hickory. In time, we'll see if it is as strong.You can see in the picture that there is a rubber grip partway down the handle. Perhaps this will be in the right place for you. I can see where it might be annoying for some people. It didn't get in my way nor did it help me. Perhaps if you put two of these shovels in your shed nose to tail, they will mate like worms.

Hori-Hori Garden knife

This is absolutely the best hand garden tool made. I have struggled with trowels that don't make the grade and finally found something that will not bend when I try to dig up a stubborn weed. The only thing I would change is to have a colored handle. The wood color makes it more difficult to spot when I lay it down in the garden. Everyone who works in the garden should have one of these.
